Derrick Ibbott is a furniture designer and maker based in Norfolk. He creates simple, contemporary designs using native and European timbers, producing bespoke commissions for private and corporate clients. Derrick always knew he wanted to work with wood. At the age of 13 he got a Saturday job with a cabinet maker, where he learned the fundamental skills of furniture making. He then followed a City and Guilds course in furniture making and worked for a succession of local furniture makers and restorers, building up his skills and moving on to finer techniques. In 2000, Derrick opened his own workshop and has deliberately kept his business small so he can continue to work hands-on and make the pieces he wants to make. In 2010, he won the Claxton Stevens award, the foremost award in the bespoke furniture industry. In designing furniture, Derrick enjoys pushing the boundaries and loves to make challenging pieces.
